Try carrying a ton of lumber or iron ore across the world using human-size portals. For that matter, try riding a horse through one (that's my flailing rationalization for the lack of horses in Dereth). For freight-carrying, ships remained a significant force for the Yalain. Remember they were spread across a vast archipelago in the southeast. Sailing was in their blood, so to speak.
