Magic Absorbing will negate a portion of all magical projectile attacks. The maximum amount of damage negated depends on the item and is based on the base magic defense (for Tomes and the Fetish of the Dark Idols) or the base shield (for all shields) of the character wielding the item. Maximum damage reduction is achieved at 319 base Magic Defense (for Tomes and the Fetish of the Dark Idols) and 433 base Shield (for all shields). Specialized shield can provide 100% of the maximum absorption of the item while trained shield maxes at 80% of the items maximum benefit.

Shields
The formula to determine magic absorption for shields:
- RED = 100% * ((CAP * ST * SKILL * 0.0030) - (CAP * ST *.3))
- Where:
- RED = Reduction%
- CAP = Maximum reduction/100%
- ST = 1.0 for specialized, 0.8 for trained/untrained
- SKILL = 100 to 433 (above 433 base shield you always achieve the maximum %)
Tomes and Bows
The formula to determine magic absorption for Tomes and the Fetish of the Dark Idols:
- For a 25% maximum item: (magic absorbing %) = 25 - (0.1 * (319 - base magic defense))
- For a 10% maximum item: (magic absorbing %) = 10 - (0.4 * (319 - base magic defense))

Analysis
- A character with trained/specialized shield skill can achieve maximum absorption fairly easily, as their base shield can likely be raised over 433.
- A character that does not have shield or missile weapons trained can still benefit from magic absorbing items by using a shield or imbued missile weapon with no wield requirement.
- A character with untrained shield wielding a 25% shield with 10 base Strength and Coordination gives:
- ((.25 * .8 * 200 * .0030) - (.25 * .8 * .3) = .06 or 6% absorption
- A character with untrained shield wielding a 25% shield with 100 base Strength and Coordination gives:
- ((.25 * .8 * 290 * .0030) - (.25 * .8 * .3) = .114 or 11.4% absorption
- A character wielding a Fetish of the Dark Idols imbued missile weapon with 10 base Focus and Willpower and trained Magic Defense gives:
- 25 - (.1 * (319 - 265)) = 19.6% absorption
- A character wielding a Fetish of the Dark Idols imbued missile weapon with 100 base Focus and Willpower and trained Magic Defense gives:
- 25 - (.1 * (319 - 291)) = 22.2% absorption
- A character wielding a Fetish of the Dark Idols imbued missile weapon with 10 base Focus and Willpower and specialized Magic Defense gives:
- 25 - (.1 * (319 - 293)) = 22.4% absorption
- A character wielding a Fetish of the Dark Idols imbued missile weapon with 100 base Focus and Willpower and specialized Magic Defense gives:
- 25 - (.1 * (319 - 319)) = 25% absorption
- A character with untrained shield wielding a 25% shield with 10 base Strength and Coordination gives:
- So for non-shield, non-missile weapon characters, an imbued no wield missile weapon provides the most absorption. Mages can also use one of the tomes to get a lower amount of absorption but still be able to cast spells.
