Quest Overview
- To begin this quest, you must have completed all of Portal Space Research Part II.
Walk Through
- In order to access the version of Mar'uun that is not destroyed you must complete the quest from the Picking up the Pieces patch. After you complete all 4 weeks and save Mar'uun then you can do the Rift Closing Quest.
- Talk to Marcus Manfried and he will direct you to Kaywin, who will give you a Rift Opening Device and Rift Closing Device.
- Now start looking for a a Portalspace Rift, which appears on the floor as a little vent of colored gas. They are found all over Mar'uun, not just near the Test Portal area. They disappear after a short time (due to a decay timer) but always appear in the same places.
- Note: Three of the elements can be found in the test portal area: Frost under the stairs and by where Kaywin's note was located in the destroyed Mar'uun, Acid in the hallway to Kaywin and behind the north screen in the furnished room, and Lightning behind the east screen in the furnished room. An easy place to find Fire is in the entrance hallway and behind the nearby bar.
- When you see one stand near it and use the Rift Opening Device and you will be portaled into the elemental plane of whatever Elemental Rift you used (fire, frost, lightning, acid and they are color coded accordingly).
- When you land in a room use your Rift Closing Device to initiate a spawn of elemental creatures. Kill all of them and a Elemental Zenith will spawn. Kill it and you will be portaled back to Mar'uun.
- Repeat the steps above for 3 more elements until you have done all four then talk to Marcus for your reward.

Marcus Manfried tells you, "I've commissioned the creation of several items to my specifications."
Marcus Manfried tells you, "Go see Kaywin and she'll provide you with what you need."
Kaywin tells you, "Oh, I see you're here for Marcus's latest requests."
Kaywin tells you, "Truely wonderful gadgets."
Kaywin gives you Rift Opening Device.
Kaywin tells you, "One is used to open rifts. It's a crazy sight to behold... you'll be ripped directly into the rift."
Kaywin tells you, "The other is used to close rifts once you are inside. I can't truly say what that's like..."
Kaywin gives you Rift Closing Device.
Portalspace Rift teleports you with Portalspace Rift.
The rift expands as elemental creatures flow out.
Acid dissipates into the surroundings. The sour taste of acid lingers in the atmosphere.
Fire dissipates into the surroundings. The atmosphere warms and your flesh blisters.
Frost dissipates into the surroundings. The atmosphere cools and a chill numbs you to the core.
Electric dissipates into the surroundings. A charge lingers in the atmosphere striking at exposed surfaces.
As the elemental creature collapses you feel space fold in on itself. It feels like your gut turned inside out as you're ripped back through portal space.
Marcus Manfried tells you, "Excellent, you've closed all the rifts."
Marcus Manfried tells you, "The Arcanum has given these to reward those who aid our call for help."
Marcus Manfried gives you Mana Forge Key.
You've earned 100,000,000 experience.
Marcus Manfried tells you, "This won't be the end of the rifts. By my calculations you'll be able to assist us again in over six days time."
You hand over 1 of your Rift Opening Devices.
You hand over 1 of your Rift Closing Devices.
Marcus Manfried tells you, "Any further exposure may cause catastrophic consequences."
Marcus Manfried tells you, "My calculations say that you'll have to wait at least six days from your last exposure to the elemental planes."
Marcus Manfried tells you, "Adventurers into the elemental planes act as an anchor, rooting it. Any one individual spending too much time in the elemental planes will cause it to become coterminous with our own plane."
Marcus Manfried tells you, "Trust me, that's something we don't want but we must close these rifts..."
Marcus Manfried tells you, "Luckily we stopped our experiments before we tapped into any planes beyond the four basic elemental planes."
