I can explain my view of the Call phenomenon in some detail, but I'm not sure you should listen to me. This feels like something that should be left up to the individual player. It's your character, it's your story. Do what you think best.

Personally, I don't believe that the first portals needed any sort of magical compulsion to attract humans. We're naturally curious creatures. We're easily attracted by shiny objects.

Originally, the portals appeared anywhere, completely at random. It was equally likely to encounter one in the wilderness as in the city - though Ispar has far more wilderness than city. After the death of the One Queen that throw-of-the-die selection changed. The portals appeared far less frequently They appeared to only a few, and they DID feel compelled. It was, in short, as if the portals had stopped being a random force of nature, and become a directed effort.

I can tell you that there are no portals from Dereth to any of the various other worlds. All roads lead here. There are none back. Asheron would not have shown up on your doorstep and asked you to come with him. It's possible that you could imagine that he did, that you can misremember or polish the real memory with a shimmering veneer of mysticism. This is considered to happen in "The Emperor's Blade."
